How to ruin a reputation
Ketchikan has the reputation of being on an island with a poor deer population.I have my doubts. It could be something as simple as access, which would then make it pale in comparison to Prince of Wales — my home island. Students show me pictures of the bucks they got on POW. I tell them as long as they stay out of my spots, they can go get their deer. Friends head over there too. I tell them as long as they stay out of my spots, they can go get their deer. The thing is, their spots are probably better than mine. The scary thing about this is, with that amount of pressure, who knows how long the deer hunting will be so good? Reputations are frequently ruinous. My buddy Zack and I wanted to see for ourselves what the hunting around Ketchikan is all about. His fiancee is from Ketchikan, but he’s from Pennsylvania, so the program up here is much different than what he’s used to. Either way, he’s excited and willing to do some work. That has to be the key, because there is no way an island as big as Revilla lacks a solid deer population. Maybe it’s just a matter of getting after it, and that’s what we decided to do. We’d be willing to hike and make it back into areas others wouldn’t.See full column at:http://www.capitalcityweekly.com/stories/111314/ae_1226898584.shtml
